Nothing to be Afraid Of
The work of Lukas Moll embraces the complexity of human difference. The Aachen, Germany-based artist’s rich mixed-media portraits offer chances to celebrate all things unique. However, Moll goes above and beyond simply capturing the personal and the discriminate, the artist utilizes pure creativity to draw out the beauty and power in each portrait. Lukas Moll shows us that in terms of difference, there is nothing to be afraid of and everything to be embraced.
Part One: Who is Lukas Moll?
Question One: Who are you?
My Name is Lukas and I’m a young, self-taught artist from Aachen, Germany. I grew up in Aachen and currently I’m studying Marketing Management in Düsseldorf. As an artist I started with some really small exhibitions in cafés in Aachen but got the chance to show my artworks with a group of well known local artists very early in my art career. I got the opportunity to do my first solo show in the Mittelrhein Museum in Koblenz and also already had a solo show in Geleen in the Netherlands.
Question Two: Who are you as an artist?
I’m fascinated by humans of all kind. I’m always looking for unique beauty. For me, life is about celebrating uniqueness, diversity, and then bringing it all together like the varied colors of a rainbow. Different yet connected. I think humans that stick out because of their uniqueness, that are not trying to fit the mold, are way more beautiful and refreshing. It’s actually really sexy if you just be yourself. That’s what I’m trying to capture as an artist.
Question Three: In terms of your artistic journey, why are you here and where are you going?
I’m here because I’m looking for ways to expand as an artist and reach more people to get to know my art and me as an artist. I’m currently testing the waters for online selling of my artworks and virtual galleries and hope that this will be a good way to deal with the ongoing pandemic crisis at the moment, since it’s not easy for artists to do exhibitions or art shows right now.
Question Four: What do you absolutely need your audience to know about you or your work?
My work is a celebration of uniqueness, a love for the different. Everybody is beautiful and belongs here.
Question Five: What has the process of making art taught you or given you?
I’ve been an outsider for a big part of my life. I’ve had my coming out quite early, when I still went to school and that put a lot of pressure on me. The process of making art for me is very wholesome because I can show that uniqueness and being different is nothing you have to be afraid of, but something to celebrate and be proud of.
Question Six: What keeps you going?
There are so many beautiful people out there that inspire me every single day. Sometimes it’s just a tiny tattoo someone has, sometimes it’s the way a couple engages with each other on a train. These things keep me going. As long as I find inspiration I’ll have to draw or paint.
Part Two:
What is your artistic practice?
Before I start to draw or paint there is a heavy research process. I have tons of reference images that inspired me once. With photoshop I build a reference to work with. I mix tattoos, hairstyles, poses, eyes, everything from different photos to generate the picture I have in my mind. That’s the reference I then work with to draw or paint the portrait. It’s kinda like Frankenstein’s Monster.
